PMI Talent Triangle: Leadership

More about this month's topic: The way people connect and communicate has evolved dramatically in this decade, and those changes have significantly impacted the way we live, including within the workplace. There are many different theories that describe how people could/should interact in the modern workplace, not all of which agree. This talk will describe how the approaches of Connective Leadership and Courageous Followership (intelligent disobedience) fit the into current and future corporate cultures, especially in the interdependent context of project management. Connective Leadership offers an important perspective for bringing together diverse -- even conflicting -- groups that exist in an interdependent environment, while Courageous Followership gives individuals techniques to stand up to and for our leaders, preparing individuals to speak truth to power while enabling leaders to give appropriate consideration for what they hear from dissenting opinions.

Speaker Bio:

Robert “Rob” Hanna works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed by the California Institute of Technology, for the Engineering and Science Directorate as the lead for training and employee development for an organization of over 4800 scientists and engineers.  In addition, Mr. Hanna is a lecturer for the University of Hawaii, teaching project and risk management in the MBA program of the Shidler Graduate School of Business, including the Global MBA program in HCMC (Saigon) and Hanoi, Vietnam.

One highlight of Mr. Hanna’s career was when he managed the $28 million-dollar Mission Operations and Navigation Toolkit Environment (MONTE) software project, used for the first time by the Phoenix mission to Mars in 2008.  The MONTE software has since been used to design missions and navigate spacecraft by NASA, as well as by organizations around the globe.  Today, MONTE is considered the international gold standard for deep space navigation.

Mr. Hanna received his MBA with honors from the University of Southern California (USC) and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  He has received numerous awards for his work including NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal, one of the agency’s highest individual honors..
